Many new luxury hotels are opening their doors in London this year. Curiously, very few of them are particularly big.
The capital’s most closely watched arrivals cluster around the 100-room mark: Six Senses London (109 rooms), The Zetter Bloomsbury (68 rooms), Nick Jones’ St Clement (90 rooms), The Shepherd Mayfair (82 rooms), Cambridge House, part of Auberge Collection (102 rooms), and Waldorf Astoria London – Admiralty Arch (114 rooms).
Some of that is London being London. Historic buildings, tight footprints, and punishing real estate economics do not exactly encourage sprawl. But taken together, the numbers look like a bet on where luxury is heading: toward hotels large enough to support ambitious restaurants, bars, and wellness facilities, yet small enough to promise intimacy, recognition, and connection.
