Foreign transaction fees are extra charges that some credit card issuers add when you make purchases outside the United States or process a transaction in a foreign currency. They’re typically charged as a percentage of each purchase.
Many credit cards add foreign transaction fees of around 3% every time you make a purchase abroad. While that might not sound like much, those charges can add up quickly over the course of a vacation. Spend $3,000 internationally, for example, and you could end up paying about $90 in extra fees.
Fortunately, you don't have to pay a premium annual fee to avoid them.
