A reader shared a wild experience with me, whereby an airline agent insisted he wouldn’t need to include his middle name on a ticket, only for the airline to later claim that it was necessary. However, rather than fixing the problem, they just canceled the ticket, and are refusing to do anything about it… despite admitting fault!
On July 16, 2026, I read that leaving the middle name out can lead to denied boarding, so I contacted Virgin to add my middle name. The agent said Virgin will pull the call transcript from October 3, 2025, and then called me back the next day stating that they CONFIRMED that their agent wrongly told me my middle name is not necessary on the reservation. They also contacted LATAM and were told I would be denied boarding unless I have my middle name.
Virgin then PREEMPTIVELY CANCELED just my ticket without asking me (my partner is still in the reservation since my middle name was included), but was not able to rebook me since the award space from LATAM did not become available again.
The same business class itinerary now costs over $4,500. I expressed that I absolutely need to be on the same flight with my partner as originally booked, because I had already prepaid for accommodations, tours, tickets, flights within Peru, etc… all under my name. I cannot be stranded in an expensive city like NYC while my partner gets stranded in Peru since he can’t speak Spanish or check into any hotel, etc… Nothing was booked under his name.
I was not called back in 48 hours by a manager as promised, so I reached out to Virgin again and got told they will just refund my points and wash themselves of the situation if LATAM does not release last minute award availability. In other words, if there is no silver lining, they expect me to shoulder all the financial responsibility of readjusting our travel plans last minute, whether that’s booking new flight to get home and absorbing all the non-refundable costs or pay for last minute fare to be on the same flight as my partner.
This is a colossal screw-up on Virgin Atlantic’s part
This is just an absolutely terrible showing on Virgin Atlantic’s part. The airline admitted it made the mistake, then canceled the ticket without the passenger’s permission, only to then say it couldn’t do anything to fix it? Huh??
Virgin Atlantic is generally an airline with great customer service, so this is a really disappointing way for the airline to handle this situation, in my opinion. The irony is that as much as airlines do tell you to include middle names on tickets, you’re highly unlikely to be denied boarding over this, so they really screwed this up.
