United Airlines is extending its “Base” fares to domestic first class and shorthaul international business class. United calls this more choice, but I see another way to charge premium passengers more for benefits that used to be included…and I think it undermines the very premium experience United is trying to sell.

The new fares will become available in the coming weeks. This follows the introduction of Base fares in United Polaris and United Premium Plus earlier this year.
