President Donald Trump wants to restore nonstop flights between the United States and Lebanon after more than four decades. I welcome that goal (paging Patrick Quayle!), but a new report identifies problems at Beirut Airport that a presidential order cannot fix.
Its firefighting resources were also deemed insufficient for the twin-aisle aircraft typically used on longhaul routes. The findings extend to regulatory oversight, including insufficient qualified inspectors and the absence of a fully operational, independent accident investigation authority.
Lebanese Transport Minister Fayez Rasamny says corrective work is underway, with airport certification efforts beginning October 17 and conditional certification expected shortly. He said authorities had already identified most of the issues and that war had delayed progress.
