United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby is again predicting that American Airlines will eventually retreat from Chicago O’Hare, arguing that the economics of its current operation simply cannot hold. Kirby may ultimately be right, but I hope he isn’t. A United-dominated O’Hare would be great for United but very bad for Chicago travelers.
Earlier this year, the United CEO predicted that American could lose roughly $1 billion annually in Chicago and declared that United would draw a “line in the sand” to prevent American from gaining additional gates at its expense.
Now he’s doubling down.
