Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary is warning that European airfares could rise as much as 20% next year, potentially producing what he calls the biggest increase in the region’s history. I would not book a ticket simply because an airline CEO says prices are going up, but the reasons behind this warning deserve attention.

Ryanair has substantial protection against fuel price increases through March 2027, with 80% hedged at $67 per barrel. Beginning in April, however, its coverage drops sharply: O’Leary says only 15% is hedged at $85 per barrel, roughly half the current spot price.

While that does not mean fares will increase by precisely 20% nor that every European flight will become more expensive, it’s a frank forecast from a no-nonsense SEO.
