I never wanted to gate-check my carry-on in the first place.

On a recent Austrian Airlines flight from Valencia, Spain, to Vienna, I was asked to gate-check my carry-on bag. I'd traveled with the same bag many times before, but its dimensions slightly exceeded Austrian's published limits, a reminder that many European airlines enforce carry-on rules more strictly than I've become accustomed to.

It seemed like a minor inconvenience at the time. Instead, it meant spending three days of my five-night trip to Vienna for the Eurovision Song Contest without most of the clothes I'd packed.

A great solo travel tip spotted this week on The Points Guy Articles.
