Fuel Crushed Alaska’s Profit, But Aurora Is The Right Bet

Fuel wiped out Alaska’s first-half profit, but the lie-flat Aurora suites coming to its 737 MAX-10s are exactly the product the airline needs to build.

None of that is unique to Alaska. I wrote recently that holiday airfares are jumping as airlines cut seats and fuel soars, and Alaska is a carrier with a smaller network and has less coverage than network carriers several times its size. What stands out is what Alaska decided to do about it. Rather than spend more time on a problem it cannot solve and is felt throughout the industry, it spent its investor day on September 29, 2026 announcing its premium push.

Alaska’s 737s have no lie-flat seat today, but this shifts competitiveness on routes where the workhorse of the Alaska fleet is center stage. The airline also cut seats from domestic premium and main cabin to make room, according to chief commercial officer Andrew Harrison. Of all of the smart decisions around this move, all of the shifted space should have come from the back to align with that premium sector of the market and Premium Economy products are as important as business class for many corporate customers.

A great solo travel tip spotted this week on Live and Let's Fly.
