The flydubai cockpit attack is disturbing enough. Now comes reporting that the first officer had previously been suspended from flying over extremism concerns. How did someone with that history end up flying an aircraft full of passengers to Israel?
The wounded captain managed to open the cockpit door, passengers intervened, and other company pilots traveling onboard landed the aircraft safely. Their bravery saved the flight. But the latest reporting raises an alarming question about why the first officer was in that cockpit at all.
The Journal could not establish whether Oman communicated those concerns to other countries or airlines, or the precise nature of his radicalization. ABC News offers a more specific account. Citing senior intelligence and law enforcement officials, it reports that the suspect was an Oman Air co-pilot trainee in 2024 when extremist materials were found in his possession.
