Chase Sapphire Lounges Cut Priority Pass Access: Probably Good News

The access policies for Chase Sapphire Lounge locations are being updated, and they impact those who receive a Priority Pass membership through anything other than a Chase credit card, as well as those on connecting itineraries. Depending on how you look at it, this is either good or bad news…

There was one other interesting option, though. Those who had a Priority Pass membership through any other means — whether it’s another credit card, or just outright purchasing a membership — could access a single Chase Sapphire Lounge once per calendar year with no guests. Furthermore, they’d have a preferential rate of $75 per additional visit, or per guest.

Well, that way of accessing the lounges is coming to an end. For visits as of August 15, 2026, those who earn a Priority Pass membership through anything other than a Chase credit card will no longer get any complimentary access to Chase Sapphire Lounges, and also won’t get the preferential $75 pricing anymore.

Just in the interest of being abundantly clear, there are no changes to access for those who have a Priority Pass membership through an eligible Chase card, whether it’s a Sapphire Reserve or Ritz-Carlton Card.

There’s another change coming as of August 15, 2026. As of then, those traveling on a same day layover or connecting itinerary can enjoy Chase Sapphire Lounge access up to five hours before their connecting flight departure, expanded from the previous three hour policy. Meanwhile for those originating at the airport, the policy is still three hours before departure.

As it’s described, “this update reflects Chase’s continued focus on enhancing the travel experience and delivering added value to our cardmembers.”

Chase Sapphire Lounges are limiting Priority Pass access

What’s the motivation behind these policy changes?

When it comes to cutting access to Chase Sapphire Lounges for those without a Chase credit card, I think the motive here is pretty obvious. The lounges are getting crowded, and Chase wants to prioritize its own customers.

The previous policy of allowing one visit per year for others was an unusual and interesting one, and sort of brilliant. The idea was to let those with another premium credit card (whether from Amex, Capital One, or Citi) experience a Chase Sapphire Lounge, in hopes of that being enough motivation for them to pick up a premium Chase credit card that grants unlimited access.

Yes, Chase got paid when people visited the lounge, but the reimbursement presumably wasn’t directly worth the investment, given the greatly elevated food, drinks, and amenities. These credit card lounges aren’t about turning a direct profit on access, but instead, about getting people into the card ecosystem.

Now, I wouldn’t expect this to materially alter crowding levels. I don’t have any data on this, but my assumption would be that a vast majority of people accessing Chase Sapphire Lounges are those who also have Chase credit cards.

Chase Sapphire Lounges have some great amenities

Bottom line

As of August 15, 2026, Chase Sapphire Lounges will be getting new access requirements. Most significantly, the once annual access perk for those with Priority Pass memberships through non-Chase cards will end.

A great solo travel tip spotted this week on One Mile at a Time.
