Imagine a time when Americans could be arrested by soldiers and imprisoned without the ordinary opportunity to challenge their detention before a judge. When a former congressman could be tried by a military commission for a political speech, then banished from the country. When newspaper offices could be occupied by troops and publication stopped. Imagine an editor imprisoned in the very fortress his grandfather had immortalized in a song about American freedom.
We have lived through that America.
