Britain’s sustainable aviation fuel mandate could add approximately $34 (£25) to the price of a shorthaul airline ticket, as carriers struggle to obtain enough qualifying fuel to satisfy increasingly ambitious government requirements.
The current mandate requires sustainable aviation fuel, commonly called SAF, to account for 2% of jet fuel supplied in the United Kingdom. That requirement will increase to 10% by 2030 and 22% by 2040.
The particular concern involves a cap taking effect in 2027 on SAF produced from used cooking oil and animal fats. The government hopes that limiting this comparatively established form of SAF will encourage investment in newer synthetic fuels.
