American Airlines canceled bargain award tickets nearly three weeks after issuing them, including a handful of tickets booked by Gary Leff of View From The Wing. Now he is challenging the cancellations, arguing that American missed its own deadline for correcting pricing mistakes. Having read the relevant provisions, I find his argument far more persuasive than American’s defense.
He booked family trips to Australia and Italy, plus a solo trip to New York that included American’s departing A321T Flagship First Class product. The Australia awards cost 24,500 miles per person outbound and 10,000 returning, with business class across the Pacific. Italy cost 12,500 miles per person each way, with business class across the Atlantic.
Gary acknowledges recognizing the unusually low prices…it was clearly an erroneous fare. Nevertheless, he says the lower totals appeared on the final payment page, and American issued the tickets. AA discovered the problem two days after he booked but waited nearly three weeks from booking to cancel. He filed a complaint with the Department of Transportation.
A great solo travel tip spotted this week on Live and Let's Fly.
