Yesterday, I wrote about Tom Burnett, a husband and father aboard United Flight 93 who used his final minutes to protect people he would never meet. Today, I want to consider what our nation did with his sacrifice.
The answer is not comfortable.
American flags appeared everywhere. Churches filled. Members of Congress stood together on the Capitol steps. Political divisions briefly receded as Americans donated blood, volunteered, comforted strangers, and gathered around grieving families.
