DOT ended its 2025 freeze on new Mexican airline routes from Mexico City on October 16, and Aeromexico says it could name new US cities as soon as next week.
When Matthew covered the DOT move against the Delta and Aeroméxico joint venture last September, the dispute was framed as a fight over slots and cargo in Mexico City. On October 16, the Department of Transportation closed the other front, revoking its October 2025 order that had blocked Mexican airlines from adding flights between Mexico City and the United States.
The 2025 order rejected schedules that included Aeroméxico flights to Houston, McAllen and San Juan; Volaris service to Newark, and Viva service to Austin and LAX. The DOT claimed it was acting in response to Mexican government measures that harmed US carriers, namely the relocation of cargo operations and cuts to slots at Mexico City. Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, called the decision unjustified and unilateral at the time.
