United Airlines reported record third-quarter revenue, with strong growth in premium travel, business bookings, and even Basic Economy. But the comparison with Delta is revealing: United brought in slightly more revenue once Delta’s third-party refinery sales are excluded, yet Delta generated substantially more adjusted profit. Both airlines are finding passengers willing to pay more. Keeping that money is proving harder.
That is largely what United’s Q3 2026 earnings announcement delivered. Revenue reached $17.9 billion, but adjusted pre-tax profit declined, and the outlook suggests fuel will remain a substantial problem through the end of the year.
I appreciate United’s product investments and continue to enjoy flying it…I’ll even go so far as to predict that United will eventually surpass Delta in terms of profitability unless there is an economic crash or geopolitical crisis. Nevertheless, the financial comparison deserves more than a celebration of record sales and United is still behind Delta in the most important category of profitability.
A great solo travel tip spotted this week on Live and Let's Fly.
