I enjoyed a lovely late-evening twilight stroll through Nuuk, the compact and colorful capital of Greenland.
Nuuk is a modern capital, but people have lived around this fjord for thousands of years. The present city traces its colonial origins to 1728, when Danish-Norwegian Lutheran missionary Hans Egede moved his settlement here and called it Godthåb, meaning “Good Hope.” The Greenlandic name Nuuk, meaning “cape,” later became the city’s official name.
The city has expanded considerably beyond its historic center, but the old harbor remains very picturesque, with brightly painted wooden homes set against mountains and water.
