I drive between Los Angeles and Palm Springs almost every week, passing San Bernardino International Airport and never really thinking it was anything other than a boneyard. What I somehow missed was that I could actually buy a ticket and fly from this airport. Yes, Los Angeles has a “secret” sixth airport about 60 miles east of downtown, which by Ryanair standards probably makes it Los Angeles Central.

But there is another option a bit farther east: San Bernardino International Airport (SBD).

Yes, I realize that Palm Springs, San Diego, and other airports are also in Southern California. I am talking about another airport serving the greater Los Angeles and Inland Empire market, one that I had mentally filed away as a place for cargo, aircraft maintenance, and parked jets (there is parked South African Airways A340-600 that has caught my eyes for years as I drive by it on CA-210).

A great solo travel tip spotted this week on Live and Let's Fly.
