Las Vegas hotel rates hit their lowest of 2026 and August still lost 4.3% of visitors. Some blame the calendar, but the airport numbers say it’s bigger.

Las vegas tourism down 2026

The LVCVA’s explanation is the calendar. Labor Day fell on September 7 this year instead of September 1, so the holiday weekend that padded August 2025 landed in September 2026. That might be a legitimate point, but September’s numbers will show how much of the dip it explains. My sense is that it won’t explain everything and further, if it’s the case, the rates wouldn’t have dropped too.

An important note that contributed to a drop in traffic, and thus, Las Vegas tourism numbers, have to be led by Spirit’s demise (covered extensively on this site) which stopped flying on May 2. I flagged back in April how much Spirit and Frontier needed the California to Las Vegas corridor, and that’s now just Frontier. Meanwhile, US airlines booked a record $9.8 billion in tickets for August, which means Americans are, in fact, traveling but simply not choosing Vegas.
