This shouldn’t come as a surprise, but American Airlines’ co-branded Barclays credit cards are no longer open to new applicants, as the airline instead heads toward an exclusive agreement with Citi.
For now, existing cardmembers can continue to use their cards. The expectation is that as of some point in 2026, these cards will be converted into Citi products, and more details will be shared in the coming months.
The reason for the conversion is that American and Citi have entered into an exclusive credit card agreement (announced in late 2024), which ultimately is expected to net American significantly more money. It remains to be seen how exactly that transition works out.
A great solo travel tip spotted this week on One Mile at a Time.
