I had a short conversation with United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby about his support for a wealth tax and steep inheritance taxes. I asked whether he wanted to leave something to his seven children. His response turned to fairness…and Elon Musk.
But that’s where he took the conversation. He chuckled and insisted that he does not have a political agenda nor that he set out to make that point in his recent and controversial New York Times interview. Instead, the NYT returned to this issue twice during the interview.
Nevertheless, he went on to justify his belief in the wealth tax and a steep inheritance tax by framing the issue in terms of fairness, specifically mentioning his issue with stepped-up basis (a tax rule that resets the value of an appreciated asset to its fair market value on the day the previous owner dies), the general problem of inequality, and the growing gap between rich and poor.
A great solo travel tip spotted this week on Live and Let's Fly.
