31 Years After Mandela’s Iconic 747 Flyover, This 45-Foot Stadium Pass Feels Very Different

South Africa has a long tradition of dramatic airline flyovers before major sporting events. The most famous came in 1995, when a South African Airways Boeing 747 swept low over Ellis Park before the Rugby World Cup final, a moment later recreated in Invictus and forever tied to the optimism surrounding Nelson Mandela’s new South Africa.

31 years later, two Airlink Embraer jets flew over a packed Cape Town stadium before another Springboks-All Blacks match. This time, the spectacle felt very different.

The videos are spectacular in one sense, but also very alarming.

A great solo travel tip spotted this week on Live and Let's Fly.
