Qantas Is Accelerating A380 Retirement, But Its Next-Generation Business Class Looks Excellent

Qantas has unveiled a significant round of fleet and product updates, including an accelerated retirement of its Airbus A380s, new Boeing 787 business class suites with doors, and lie-flat business class suites for a subfleet of Airbus A321XLRs. There is a lot here, but the broader theme is clear: Qantas is moving toward smaller, more premium aircraft.

Qantas will begin retiring its remaining Airbus A380s in 2028, roughly four years earlier than previously planned.

The carrier currently has 10 A380s remaining, and the phaseout is expected to begin in 2028 and continue through around 2030. Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson explained that the economics of keeping the superjumbo flying are becoming increasingly challenging as the aircraft ages:
