Summer In Germany With My Kids: Long Walks, Family Time, And A Lot Of Ice Cream

My kids are very blessed to be able to spend a month in Germany with their grandparents each summer. It’s an amazing way for them to practice German and connect with the German side of our family. I was tasked with dropping them off and spent a few days there before heading back to the USA. Here are some pictures from our time together.

A Few Wonderful Summer Days With My Kids In Germany

If you’ve been reading this blog for years, you know we tend to be creatures of habit when traveling to Germany. My in-laws live just over the German border from Basel, Switzerland in that beautiful part of Europe where France, Germany, and Switzerland meet. Our time there is usually spent the same way: long walks each night, biking to church to Basel on Sunday evenings, and plenty of ice cream…in fact, I think kids are getting ice cream just about every day on this trip, which is somewhat concerning as I write this now.

After flying Austrian from LA to Vienna and spending a night in Vienna, we finally reached Germany and I could not have been blessed with better weather during my stay. Summers used to be so pleasant in Germany but in recent years have turn oppressively hot, not just because of the sustained high temperatures but because my in-laws (like most Germans) have no air conditioning. Thankfully that was not an issue while dropping off the kids: the weather was very lovely in the low 70sF (low 20sC).

Here are some pictures from my few days there:

A great solo travel tip spotted this week on Live and Let's Fly.
