United Airlines Says Goodbye To 250 Million Plastic Cups With New Paper Design

United Airlines has begun eliminating its familiar transparent blue plastic cups and replacing them with a new recyclable paper cup designed for both hot and cold beverages. The environmental benefits sound substantial, but I am not convinced this represents an improvement to the passenger experience.

The new blue paper “universal cup” began rolling out on August 1, 2026, on international flights and United Express routes. The rollout will expand to all mainline domestic flights on October 1. Unlike United’s previous system, which used separate paper cups for hot drinks and plastic cups for cold beverages, the new cup can hold both.

United first hinted at the change last year, saying it had created a cross-functional team to find an alternative capable of handling hot, cold, and alcoholic beverages without compromising safety or the customer experience.

A great solo travel tip spotted this week on Live and Let's Fly.
