American Airlines says recent changes to Basic Economy produced a five-point increase in customers paying to move up to Main Cabin. That is good news for American’s revenue strategy, but it also confirms what I’ve been saying for years: Basic Economy is designed less as an attractive low fare than as a warning label.
During its second-quarter earnings call, American revealed that the percentage of customers paying to move from Basic Economy to Main Cabin increased by five points for tickets sold during the quarter.
